It is the largest town of Upper Frignano with a population of just over 3,000 inhabitants that increase in winter. The first important settlements dates back to the third century BC but the name of the city is traced back to the eighth century, it is therefore likely that its official foundation took place around 176 BC following the defeat of the local tribes by the Romans.
In its territory have found home lots of religious communities that, thanks to the foundation of schools, have helped spread culture and education among the population of the area. The churches and the monasteries, once inhabited by the religious, can still be visit today.
Since 2001 Fanano was awarded the orange flag of the Italian Touring Club, a prize reserved only to inland locations with great tourist services and maximum respect for the local environment.
Fanano offers natural landscapes, similar to the Alps: forests full of mushrooms and chestnuts where it's possible to go into for wonderful excursions. Beautiful are event the walks around the lake Scaffaiolo, rainwater origin. Close to the lake passes the Sentiero Italia, a trail that runs along the entire Apennines up to the Alps.
Appreciated by tourists for the short distance from the ski resort of Cimone. In the locality named Cimoncino there are skilifts that lead to five downhill slopes and a cross-country track. In Piancavallaro there is the snow park equipped for many evolutions both on skis and snowboard.
